Branding a Citywide Safety Initiative
Business Watch Tampa was one of the first projects that connected me to my new home. I had just moved to Tampa when the police department launched this community safety initiative in Ybor City. Being invited in to shape its identity and communication felt like stepping directly into the heart of the city. The work mattered. It was about safety, unity, civic pride. I was a graphic designer eager to contribute something real.
The initiative grew fast. What began as a pilot program in Ybor soon expanded into Downtown, South Tampa, Westshore, and more. Creating the mother brand and each district’s identity became a way of giving back to the communities I was becoming part of. The work taught me how design can strengthen trust, amplify collaboration, and leave a physical mark on a place. To this day, I still walk through Ybor and see the decals I designed. That means something.

The Journey
The work centered on strengthening how Business Watch Tampa connected with local communities. We clarified the message, unified the identity, and built materials that helped the initiative expand from Ybor into other districts with a clearer, more consistent presence.
Challenge
The program needed to unite a broad set of businesses under one recognizable identity. Ybor City was the test ground… a place full of history, character, and long held perceptions. The branding had to be trustworthy, simple, and flexible enough to support expansion into Downtown, South Tampa, Westshore, and beyond.
Strategy
We began by gathering insight from Tampa PD officers, district partners, and business owners. Their needs shaped the framework for the brand. From there, I developed a master identity supported by district specific logos and decals. Each variation honored its neighborhood’s personality while reinforcing one cohesive citywide program.
Results
The new identity helped Business Watch Tampa evolve from a single district pilot into a recognized citywide initiative. Clearer visuals strengthened adoption, improved communication between businesses and law enforcement, and built a sense of shared community responsibility. The decals became a familiar part of Tampa’s streetscape, reinforcing safety and connection across every participating district.
The Decals
What I’m Most Proud Of
The decals remain the most meaningful part of this project for me. They were simple, direct, and instantly recognizable… but more than that, they became part of Tampa’s visual landscape. Years later, I still walk through Ybor and Downtown and see them on storefronts. For a designer new to the city at the time, leaving that kind of lasting mark meant everything.
